Substantive Fiction Editing.

Did you know that I not only try to sell books, I also have another string to my literary bow. Under my own name of Steve Frost, I edit fiction as a substantive fiction editor. Which basically means I forensically edit a manuscript word by word, line by line, chapter by chapter, looking for ways the pace, flow, and overall readability can be improved. I’ve been doing this on and off now for a number of years. More details can be found at my editing site here www.s-f-editing.co.ukSteve Frost

Charon Unguarded By A H Johnstone. My Review.

I started reading this on Friday night and have nearly finished it on Monday afternoon, just a few pages left. This in itself is something of a miracle for me, as it’s rare for a book to engage me so fully. The book is fast-paced, funny in places, and shows the ancient gods and other people and creatures of folklore in a completely different modern 21st-century setting. They are here, because, a millennium before they were all banished from their various realms and made to live in the world of mankind, which, obviously pees many of them off.

The story is set around Charon, The Ferryman of ancient Greek mythology whose job was to transport the dead across the two rivers separating the land of the living to the land of the dead. Charon is now the doorkeeper at a seemingly empty office block. He’s quite happy doing this keeping his head down and getting on with things.

Then he hears about something from Ra, the ancient Egyptian sun god, that if it happens, will destroy all of them and all of mankind. Charon has no choice but to try and discover what this is and stop it.

***** I give this five stars out of five any day.

This is a debut novel written by a friend of mine who lives in Northamptonshire and is big into wielding swords and things at weekends as a Viking period reenactor.

Charon was once the Ferryman of the Underworld. Now he’s the doorman of a disused office block. If only the old Gods hadn’t lost that drunken bet all those centuries ago, things would be very different. For a start, Ragnarok probably wouldn’t be on its way. Ra is looking for a way of escaping the mortal realm, but there’s something about his plans he isn’t telling everyone. Maybe Charon is the only one who’s noticed. He certainly seems to be the only one who cares. But can he do anything about it? It looks like he’s going to try. But there are others who might profit from the situation, and the last thing he wants is the Fae…

In Charon Unguarded, A. H. Johnstone tells an unlikely story that somehow seems all too likely and confirms what we have always known; that the Gods of our Ancestors were often all too human. – Harry DeWulf, 2017

Website Update

Over the last few days, I’ve been making some tweaks to the website to make it look better and to iron out a few tweaks on the mobile-friendly view. I have to thank Anna Johnstone for her advice on this. Hopefully, now the site looks top notch and sales will soon flood in.

The only small issue is that the site sometimes shows as being unsafe on mobile view. It’s not, it has an up to date SSL certificate (https at the start of the URL). Some googling and Binging shows this to be a thing with Android phones and has nothing to do with the site. I’ve run it through some websites that check website security and it comes out clean every time.

Oh, one more thing, I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned this before, so bear with me if I have. I’ve officially changed the business name at Companies House To M.A Bookshop Limited.

News Update

I’m writing this at just after three in the morning because I usually wake up around this time. Don’t worry, I’ll go back to bed when I’ve done this. As you will see, I’ve designed a new logo, and I’ve also just applied to officially change the company name to M.A Bookshop Limited. I think having an official name and a trading name that are different, may put up red flags to some people.

One other thing I’ve done is add a live chat facility to the website. This appears to be seen a being highly important for e-commerce websites these days because it gives customers another opportunity and way of interacting with you.

This month (Feb) the site has had over 1000 page hits, which is good. I just need to start converting a few more to actual sales. Got bills and things to pay.

New Trading Name = M.A Books

As you may have noticed we have a slightly different trading name from previous. The reason for doing this is, firstly M.A Books is simpler, 2nd, it’s less gender specific sounding than Maureen-Anne, 3rd, it comes out with a favourable score in numerology, whereas the previous name was very unfavourable.

It’s a pain in the rear end changing everything, and one day I’d like to change the website URL to match, but that’s not on the cards at the moment.

A Good Days Work

Yesterday (Wed 14th Feb 2018) I spent listing a load of old vintage Ladybird books I’d bought. I’d just finished listing them on the website when I got an offer for the lot I couldn’t refuse. I made a nice little profit on those. Hopefully the start of more nice little, (or big, big’s better), profits on other things.
